Please join us at Adoray’s 3rd annual fundraising Gala for a night focused on unmasking the fright of end-of-life for hospice patients of all ages throughout Western Wisconsin.

Enjoy exquisite food, bid on one-of-a-kind silent auction items and a live dessert auction, with an after-dinner reception featuring the River Rat’s Dueling Pianos! You won't want to miss it!

Last year, we raised over $12,000 at the Gala that directly went to support hospice patients. Help us raise even more this year by getting your ticket today!

If you have any questions about the Gala, contact Amber Bettinger, Development Director at 715-629.1922 or visit us at www.adoray.org/gala

Greetings to September, Hospice Volunteers!

Hope you are enjoying these late summer/early fall days.

I am in the process of currently checking your records to make sure all paperwork has been received with your 2019 training.  If you have not done so yet, please send me your signed forms as soon as possible.
Let me know if you have questions.

NEW! Adoray Email Addresses for Hospice Volunteers

Good News!  Introducing a new and safe process of communicating patient information with hospice volunteers: Adoray email addresses.  In order to keep patient information private and be compliant with HIPAA regulations, your own secure personal Adoray email address is coming your way for hospice volunteer communication.

Once your Adoray email has been successfully set up and working, paper copies and mailings to you will be reduced because I will email to you:  a) volunteer assignments, b) updates on patients, c) funeral and condolence card information d) any other Adoray correspondence containing patient information.  In turn, you will be able to email me your completed volunteer charting forms and other patient information with your personal Adoray email – no need to send me charting forms by regular mail, making the new communication quicker and safer.  All good news!

If you currently use a personal email for communication with Adoray, you will soon receive another email giving instructions on how to set up your new Adoray email.  Your computer or laptop is the preferred way to access, but a smart device can also be used but will need extra help with setup.  Assistance with installation and training in the Adoray office with Leann Huston and myself are on the following dates/times:

Tuesday, September 24 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Tuesday, September 24 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Please let me know the session you are interested in attending or if other arrangements are needed.

Note: If you do not wish to access or use an email mode of communication, you are not required to do so – you may still receive and send paperwork by regular mail as usual for patient assignments. However, if you are interested in using an Adoray email address for communication, please let me know.  Email set-ups will be completed by Monday, September 30, 2019.

Reminder that no patient information with names can be sent through your personal home email address.

Thank you!

TIP: Making Conversations Easier with Hearing Loss

The following suggestions may improve the ability of a patient with hearing loss to participate in conversations:

  • - Stand near the patient who is “hard of hearing” when talking.  Don’t shout from another room.
  • - Make eye contact or get the patient’s attention in some other way.
  • - Reduce confusion by turning down the TV or other background noise.
  • - Speak clearly, but don’t exaggerate lip movements.
  • - Don’t shout.  Instead, raise the volume of the voice, but don’t raise the pitch.
  • - Use simple, direct sentences.
  • - Rephrase comments if you are asked to repeat something.
  • - Support what is said with lots of gestures and facial expressions.
  • - Introduce the topic before talking about it in detail (Mrs. Price, about your doctor’s appointment on Tuesday…).

Listening is active, it is a skill, and it can be learned and improved upon.  When you really listen, you use your ears, your eyes and your heart.  When you really listen you are saying to others:  It is all right to talk and express your feelings to me; You can share your problems and concerns with me; You are important to me and I care about you.  Thank you for listening to your patients!

Upcoming Education Opportunities:

  • Thursday, October 3, 2019  10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Woodwinds Hospital, Woodbury
  • Topic:  “The Special Showing: Deathbed Visions & Dreams” by Sheila Duddy, RN, M.Ed

Let me know how I can be of service to you by calling me at 715-629-1905 or email at l.lifto@adorayhomecare.org.  Meanwhile, I’ll be in touch with you as normal with phone calls, texts and emails for your next hospice volunteer assignment.

Blessings!  Leann Lifto, Adoray Hospice Volunteer Coordinator

DeeAnn Dreistaft is the newest hospice volunteer for Adoray.  But DeeAnn is not new as a hospice volunteer – she served in the Twin Cities metro area for 30 years and now wants to continue to help hospice patients in Western Wisconsin, especially in the Hudson area.    Widely traveled and loving to volunteer, she spent 10 years with the Red Cross, 10 years with Habitat for Humanity in Brainerd, Ski for Life for 10 years and as Showtime Gals sharing her singing talents, among other clubs and organizations. DeeAnn likes to converse and meet interesting people.   In her spare time, DeeAnn enjoys gardening, canning, singing, biking, camping, exercising, walking, hiking, traveling and team travel. Welcome to the Adoray family DeeAnn and thanks for volunteering with us!

Ramping up collaboration: Adoray Volunteers help build an access ramp for a Hospice patient

An Adoray Hospice patient was recently in need of an access ramp for his residence. So when the hospice care team brought this need to Adoray’s Volunteer Coordinator Leann Lifto, she got to work and knew just the people to help get this important job done. Two of Adoray’s hospice volunteers Mike Lifto (pictured) and Randy Booth came together and built a wheelchair ramp at his home in Frederic. But they didn’t stop there. They also upgraded a bathroom shower with a closet to better accommodate the patient, to be able to shower and have room to get help from an aide.

So often, we think the little mundane things we do don’t make a difference.  But the truth is it is the combination of all the little details that each one of us provides that creates the beauty and adds to the success of the Treasures stores.  I want to share a little story that shows how the small task of washing and tagging dishes can make a difference. Thank you for all you do!

Happy Fall! Joleen

Sales Tales… submitted by Julia Marcia Lopez, River Falls Sales Associate

Over a year ago, Juniors Restaurant and Tap House updated their dinnerware. They generously donated over 4200 heavy stoneware pieces -plates, bowls, platters, etc. to Treasures River Falls.

Volunteers cleaned, tagged, displayed and sold hundreds of pieces over the course of the year -we only had sales floor space for 30 pieces at a time.

A couple of months ago, I was downstairs and working and a shopper asked me if we had anymore of a certain size of the stoneware plates – a volunteer had told her that we might.  I went in the back room to check and we did! I brought them out as they were already priced by our volunteers and the woman bought them.  She told me she was a waitress at Gausthaus Bavarian Hunter for 22 years and she was buying these for her employer as they use the same dishes.  Excited, I asked her to come into the backroom and showed her the approximately 100+ pieces we had left.  She was excited too, but she needed to check with her boss if that many additional pieces could be used by them.

A few days later she returned and purchased the entire backstock of dinnerware.  Boxes and boxes were packed and carried to her car and we had a great sale!

A few weeks later I was at the register and saw the woman again.  She told me her employer was really happy with the purchase.  She had saved them money and they were able to discard older worn pieces and replace them with the newer one.  The big oval platters were just perfect for their Chef Salads. She was excited that she had been able to find them at Treasures.

Juniors was one of the first restaurants I ever ate in when I first moved to River Falls. They are great supporters of Treasures and the entire River Falls community.  Now thanks to their donation, coupled with the hard work of many “treasured” volunteers and a smart shopper I have learned of new place to try and eat on plates that we sold.  When are we going?!

What a fun & busy weekend in Osceola! From the Harvest Bazaar, Wings & Wheels, Sunday Parade, even the monarchs showed up for all the excitement before heading south!

There is a lot of buzz around town (and we aren't just talking about the monarch migration). Recently on the side of the Osceola Treasures building four beautiful murals were added to help beautify the village.
Big thanks to our Volunteers Steve and Jason for helping put up the murals made by students Justin and Skye.

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate a great summer season at Osceola Treasures!
