Dear Friends,

I bring you greetings, and peace.  Yes, peace.  Something I have been reflecting on.  2020 has been a year of great change.  With change, comes opportunity.  How, though, do we stay peaceful in the midst of change, and while waiting for the opportunities to manifest?  Well, this has been the subject of philosophers, theologians, counselors, and our neighbors and friends, throughout history.  You see, we live in an ever-changing world.  A constant we can count on – change.

A recent article in “The Inner Entrepreneur”
lists several ways to try and find peace in the midst of chaos.  The suggestions vary from taking a break, meditating, finding the positive, intentionally seeking the silver lining, to slowing down, not letting anyone else drag you down, taking the drama out of your life, and relaxing to take your mind off of things you can’t control.  It is this last one, that I have been most interested in lately.  What are we allowing our mind to be focused on?

For me, focusing my mind, takes discipline.  Something that I practice.  Like exercising, but for this really important body organ – the brain.  Along with exercising my brain, it causes me to expand my mind to possibilities.  The possibility that things in life will eventually present themselves for the greater good.  I believe there are shifts in our historical timeline when great events have occurred, and present a crux of time where there is particular difficulty.  I believe we are in a crux right now as a society.  All is not lost, though.  Remember, we can find peace in the chaos, and realize that we will eventually be on the other side of the major shift.

In order to remain focused, I need to be aware of what I’m allowing myself to think about.  Sounds simple, but how easy it is to drift on to a different subject.  Energy seeks it’s lowest level.  So, it is normal for our thoughts to spiral in a negative way.  This quote from the Holy Bible is very helpful:  “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8).

That should be easy enough, right?  Not so much, as we’ve all found out this year.  We need to be intentional about our thoughts, because a positive, healthy outlook does not happen by accident.  A 2019 article in “Good Housekeeping” (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/a27115824/peace-quotes/), lists the following quotes for inner peace.  Reflecting on them can help in focusing and calming the mind.

  • “Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.” —Saint Francis de Sales
  • “The life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress, is the easiest type of existence.” —Norman Vincent Peale
  • “Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.” —Dalai Lama
  • “Nobody can bring you peace but yourself.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • “If you are depressed you are living in the past if you are anxious you are living in the future, if you are at peace, you are living in the present.” —Lao Tzu
  • "When things change inside you, things change around you." —Unknown
  • Peace can become a lens through which you see the world. Be it. Live it. Radiate it out. Peace is an inside job. —Wayne Dyer

The following self-reflection questions from “The Inner Entrepreneur” may help to answer questions about how to identify particular thoughts within yourself that may disturb your peace.  Answering these questions could help towards your path for inner peace.

  1. What are the things that I can control?
  2. How can I keep my peace when things don’t go my way?
  3. How can I influence others without being controlling?

Even though our lives, and our peace, seems disturbed right now, we have the opportunity to learn something in the difficulty.  That something for many of us, I believe, is how to find calm and peace in the chaos.  Keep seeking.  The peace is worth the journey to get there.  Your already serving and giving heart will thank you.

Blessings and Peace,

Your friend, Brenda

Thank you Leann!

Retired Adoray Volunteer Coordinator, Leann Lifto, has been using her volunteer service time to train our current Coordinator, Brenda Bader.  In August, Brenda and Adoray gifted Leann with a beautiful quilt donated by Martha’s Quilt Group of St. Bridget’s.  Brenda chose this quilt for Leann for the following reasons:  The doves are to bless Leann with peace in retirement.  The purple is to cover Leann with Adoray love.  The deep purple is to remind Leann that she is royal in the eyes of her creator.  The floral patterns are to honor Leann for her giftings in the area of gardening.  May this quilt continue to surround Leann with the warmth and kindness that she has shown to each of us.  We, at Adoray, are grateful for the many hours Leann has given to forward the heart of caring for our patients, volunteers, and staff.  All of our voices join together to say, “Thank you, Leann!”

With fall on it's way a quilt handmade with love sure helps keep the crisp air away! Sending a BIG thank you to Comfort Quilters for another delivery of their beautiful quilts for our hospice patients.
