Our hearts are FULL - The Hands for Hospice Golf Outing was such a fun & successful event! Adoray could not be more thankful for the Hands for Hospice Committee, The Community Foundation of Dunn County, and all of those who donated and contributed to this wonderful event. The day would not have been possible without YOU! It was a beautiful day of memorializing loved ones who have passed and recognizing the importance of quality end-of-life care in our communities. Funds raised from the Hands for Hospice Event will be used for Adoray’s Dream Big – A program designed to help both hospice patients fulfill their final wishes.
Thank you again to everyone who made this wonderful event such a success!

Come celebrate one of our own for winning the 2021 Most Admired Senior Citizen

Adoray has a new section on our Facebook pages on Mondays called #MissionMondays. This is a chance for us to share with you all the wonderful things that are happening at Adoray that are helping us achieve our mission of "Partnering to improve the quality of life throughout serious illness wherever you call home". Be sure to share these on our your own Facebook page so that your friends can see all the wonderful things going on at Adoray.

What could be better than a group of women who get together to dress up, have fun, and join in the spirit of giving? Thank you, Hudson Red Hat Club, for making Adoray your donation recipient this year.  We will put your $320 donation to good use, supporting our patients in our Palliative Care Program - which will be coming soon. A special thank you to Julie Hanssen, Red Hatter and longtime customer and donator at our River Falls Treasures from the Heart store, for inquiring about the mission at Adoray and all your support. If you or your group is looking for a great not-for-profit to donate to consider Adoray Home Health & Hospice. We are currently raising funds to launch our new palliative care program, along with other great programs that help care for our community.

Happy August, Hospice Volunteers!

A few highlights from the past month:

  • The last week in July, our census (number of hospice patients) hit a record of 70!  We currently have 34 very active volunteers serving those folks! Way to go!
  • Total hospice volunteer hours topped 71.75. Additionally, you all put a combined total of 1145 miles on your cars during your 45 visits.  (Data as of 7.29.22)
  • The Tuck-In Calling Program which checks on the needs of our patients weekly, has significantly reduced extra visits by our clinicians.

Many of you have responded to the calls for accepting one more patient visit, one more caregiver respite, or one more project.  Thank you for being willing to stretch yourselves and make time for these opportunities.  You are deeply valued by all of us! Each interaction is an opportunity to make a positive impact in our communities. Blessings!

Opportunity

by Breton Braley

With doubt and dismay you are smitten
You think there’s no chance for you, son?
Why, the best books haven’t been written,
The best race hasn’t been run,

The best score hasn’t been made yet,
The best song hasn’t been sung,
The best tune hasn’t been played yet,
Cheer up, for the world is young!

No chance? Why the world is just eager
For things that you ought to create,
It’s store of true wealth is still meager,
It’s needs are incessant and great,

It yearns for more power and beauty,
More laughter and love and romance,
More loyalty, labor and duty,
No chance–why there’s nothing but chance!

For the best verse hasn’t been rhymed yet,
The best house hasn’t been planned,
The highest peak hasn’t been climbed yet,
The mightiest rivers aren’t spanned,

Don’t worry and fret, faint hearted,
The chances have just begun,
For the best jobs haven’t been started,
The best work hasn’t been done.

August 2022 Volunteer Spotlight: Kim Patterson

Kim Patterson is the Adoray Hospice volunteer spotlight for August.  Serving the Adoray Treasures stores and hospice combined for 10 years, she has been a dedicated and valuable part of our organization. Kim has worked at stores and has volunteered in multiple hospice roles including, Visiting Companion, Caregiver Relief Companion, Household Assistant, Office Assistant, Vet-to-Vet Companion, and Bereavement Assistant.

A native of St. Croix Valley, she grew up in Clayton and now lives in Amery.  She enjoys being creative through sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She also values time with friends and grandchildren.

Recently, she took time to answer a few questions about her background as well as what she values about her time spent volunteering:

What unique skills, interests, or talents do you have? I am not sure what you consider a unique skill, however I do have the gift of gab, I always have. Ask my siblings, they will tell you they had to raise their hand for their turn to talk at the supper table. Ironically enough, I think I am a good listener also, because I love to hear others story. Everyone has a unique story to tell, a story that makes them the person they are, it’s their history.

Why were you interested in volunteering? When my father had cancer, hospice came to the house and my family was always so appreciative of the help my mother received, especially from the nurse who told my mother to journal her thoughts. I wanted to give back. That was my original reason for volunteering, however, once I started volunteering, it is the people I have helped that have kept me going. The people that have no one, that I could be there for, the people who have invited me into their homes and treated me like family. The list goes on. I volunteer because I make a difference in peoples’ lives.

Why did you choose Adoray to give your time? Article in paper, friend of mine who volunteered at Adoray talked about her experiences as a volunteer. She talked about how amazing it was and that they were looking for volunteers. I started helping in the office for HR, just doing some filing. I started helping in the stores. When Osceola first opened, they had trouble finding volunteers and for me living in Amery, it was pretty much the same distance to go to Baldwin or Osceola. Again, it is the people I work with and the people I meet that makes the work fun. I guess the rest is history.

Thank you for all you have done for Adoray and the community, Kim! We appreciate you!

A first time for everything! Recently we had a customer request to have their RFHS Senior Portraits taken at our Treasures Store in River Falls. We all were quite surprised at the unusual request and thought it very fun for a student to have chosen Treasures as her favorite thrift store! I welcomed them into the store, before we were open to the public and it was fabulous fun! Meet Abbey Edmundson of the River Falls High School Class of 2023! Abbey arrived with her mother and sister, along with their photographer, December Orpen Photography. These ladies had a blast! If you bare interested in seeing more of the snapshots, check out the Facebook page for December Orpen Photography.

Why do I have to track all my volunteer hours?
Adoray is a Not-for-Profit organization. Being true to our mission we rely heavily on volunteers to help and part of the requirement of having volunteers in that capacity is tracking their hours. We kindly ask you, no matter how small the task or short of the time it takes, record them on your Volunteer Hours sheets. We use those sheets to track the number of hours for many of the reports we share when we write a grant, speak to community organizations, report to our auditors, and share on our website. Your time is a true gift to Adoray, and we want to make sure it is recorded correctly and in a timely fashion.

Volunteer fun from River Falls! While Summer brings lots of fun outings, here’s one of our active volunteers, Donna Mae Stohlman, enjoying the St. Croix County Fair. Donna Mae is full of smiles, an active lifestyle and charisma attracting her to fun things in life. She entered a crafted hat contest at the fair and won 1st Place! We love hearing of the wonderful things in life that our volunteers enjoy doing.

Baldwin Treasures 2

Danielle is our August Spotlight. Technically Danielle is not a volunteer, however Danielle is the granddaughter of Diane Erickson. Diane is our Friday afternoon volunteer. Danielle is an incredible young lady, who out of the goodness of her heart, donated her collection of Squishmallows to us. Danielle works and earns her own money to purchase the Squishmallows. Instead of selling them, Danielle chose to donate them, not just a couple, but bags full large bags full. So we want to give a huge THANK YOU,  and recognition for being so generous and selfless.

This fun crew worked the Osceola Braves Game on Wed, July 6! Donations were taken for the store and $110 was collected for Palliative Care. Tia sang the National Anthem, Sonya spoke to the crowd about Adoray and Amanda threw out the first pitch! Volunteers sold 50/50 raffle tickets in support of the Braves team and handed out flyers promoting our 6th Anniversary. So much fun was had by all👏

Our sweet volunteer Mary Leidle is always dressing up the flower bed outside our store and making sure we are in season. Thank you Mary for sharing your talents, gifts and special bouquets from your own garden with us!

Hi Everyone!  Instead of sharing a recipe for something delicious, I thought I would share a recipe for something that all of us can use!  In fact, we are going to start using this at our Treasures stores instead of expensive cleaning solutions.  it's economical and better for the environment.  And they work!

Magic Cleaner

2 oz of blue Dawn

4 oz bottled lemon juice

8 oz white vinegar

10 oz water

Put in spray bottle. Spray surface, wipe.  If it is a nasty stain let soak overnight.

For odors and freshening the recipe below works great too!

Homemade Cleaner

1 c Hydrogen Peroxide

2 tsp baking soda

1/2 c of blue Dawn

Make sure to enter your name in the drawing EACH TIME you volunteer at
Adoray's Treasures from the Heart for a chance to win the monthly drawing at each store.
