“Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.”
-Andy Rooney

Great job as our census keeps climbing! Several of you have stepped in and taken on extra assignments and special requests over the last month. Three volunteers agreed to start delivering floral arrangements to folks having birthdays; by this weekend, five We Honor Veteran pinning ceremonies will be completed; next month a couple of volunteers will begin training as Death Doulas! Thank you for navigating this unchartered terrain of growth with enthusiasm on behalf of the patients and their families.

Within hospice, Adoray’s goal is to be fully staffed for up to 75 hospice patients.  We are currently in the process of onboarding two employees including a social worker from the Webster area as well as a nurse from Siren.  In turn, we are saying a sad good-bye to RN JoDee.

As mentioned above, members of the staff and volunteers will be training as Death Doulas this spring. We will be working as a team to create the two programs from this education: Death Doula Support and Vigil Volunteers.  The goal is to roll out the training for volunteers interested in the Vigil program in late summer/early fall. More information will be released as programming takes shape.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Education Opportunities coming April: Grief 101/Grief Doodling (by Britta Ruff, LSW and author Harriet Hodgson) – Same class, two different options: April 17, 10am-12pm or April 27, 10am-12pm
  • We have a closet full of beautiful quilts for our patients and their families. You are welcome to come to the office and pick a few up to share.  We may also be receiving prayer shawls in the near future and those will be available for you to distribute.
  • With the growing number of patients, I am not always able to give updates on everyone’s status.  If you would like a report on a patient before you have contact, please reach out to me via a call and I will be happy to share the latest pertinent information.

Hello to all our volunteers! We are already onto our next season, Spring in the stores and St. Patrick’s Day. It’s been very refreshing to have the colors back, instead of all the red and green. In River Falls, we will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary! We are all excited, the postings have been up on the Facebook page, in the Adoray and Volunteer newsletters. Spread the word for the week of luck, March 14-19. Lots of fun will be happening in River Falls and the storewide sale. Great appreciation goes out to all the volunteers for their extra time and hard work during this month. It takes a lot of consistent collaboration to make this sale successful for the store and customers. We do our best to make sure we have all items in WIP out to the sales floor, extra cashiers, stockers and friendly help to make the celebration work. Each and every day we are given so many thanks and compliments from the public, donators and customers about the service, store appearance and Adoray. In the same conversation, I direct all the praise like a ray of sunshine over to all of you, our volunteers! You are doing more than volunteering, you are giving people a reason to be thankful, share in delight and enjoy their experience at Treasures!

Here’s some fun pics to share from our cash register area in River Falls. We have had a Blooming Cactus and several African Violets for years! They always stay on the ledge, get the best and right amount of sunlight. We are blessed to have them all year round. However, they are very specific to their needs of care. We have our, one and only, volunteer Magdalena Pala as their sole caretaker. She has the right touch to help these plants thrive. Thanks, Magdalena, for the precise care you give to the plants, we all enjoy seeing them bloom all year round!

Time sure flies by... and before you know it we'll be back in our newly remodeled Treasures store. It's so exciting!!

Construction is progressing as scheduled ALL THANKS to the hard-working and talented crew.
This is a work-as-you-go project.

With the excitement and anticipation of the GRAND REOPENING, we are looking to match your talents with tasks as we become one. This will be a new venture for us all, and some of us will be entering uncharted territories.

In an effort to streamline this transition we need you to let us know WHAT DO YOU LIKE:

Shoes, toys, floral, vintage, linens, clothing (tagging/hanging), jewelry displays,
testing, (small appliances, CDs, DVDs) the list goes on.

Do you like to cashier, work back of the house, or both?

Last but not least, your availability.

We are looking forward to having each and every one of you, our treasured volunteers back in the store with us.

-The Baldwin Treasures Team -

The excitement is building!  In less than a month our NEW Baldwin Adoray's Treasures from the Heart store location will be open.  There is much to do and construction is continuing but we are on the home stretch.  It is going to be lovely!  We thought it would be fun to give you a sneak peek.

The fitting rooms are framed up and soon will be sheet rocked.  All doorways will now be completely ADA compliant.

The new kitchenette is in place.  Don’t worry, the flooring is not blue, that is just the protective sheeting to protect the flooring while we are still under construction!

The cash wrap area is being framed up with room for all our supplies and 2 cash registers and two jewelry counters.

The flooring is being installed.
The east side is being put in first as they continue sheet rocking and painting of the west side.

The dryer is ordered and tagging tables are in place and the sorting area is almost completed.  The basement has been painted and the floors are all level.  We will be able to get in very soon and then the real work begins!   It’s a buzz of activity and we appreciate your patience as the work gets done.  Mark your calendars for a special ribbon cutting event on March 31. We will be giving store tours and showing off our new digs!  Thank you for all you do for Adoray!

Friday, February 17 was Random Acts of Kindness Day. Shouldn't this be every day? Lisa spread acts of kindness throughout the town with her Valentine's poems, treats, gifts and even flowers! Mostly, she shared words of love and kindness.  She is a true ray of sunshine!  Thank you Lisa! Pictured here is Lisa, along with volunteer Jeanne and store manager Sonya holding the flowers and treats she gifted.

Speaking of sunshine... Connie has been in Florida these past couple months and shared this beautiful sunset photo on her Facebook page recently.  Incredible, right?!

Have you met our newest face on the Osceola Team? Tara Stein joined us this past month, as a Store Associate, paid employee.  Welcome! We are thrilled to add another member to our team! Hopefully, you will have a chance to meet Tara very soon.  She would love to put faces to names as she learns the ropes here.

Spring begins March 20th! Hop in to outfit your wardrobe - we are bringing out more and more Spring clothing every week!

A Recipe from Joleen:

I am currently in one of my favorite places ...Cozumel.  Enjoy the sun, visiting with our friends and making new ones!  Cozumel is known for the wonderful diving.  That is what brings us here year after year.  They are also known for their many wonderful restaurants.

Close to where we are staying is a wonderful bakery, with light and airy pastries that are to die for!  The also make desserts,  fried ice-cream, churros and one of my favorites, Tres Leche Cake.  Enjoy!

Tres Leche Cake

Cake

  • 1 1/2 cups (200g) cake flour* (scoop and level to measure)
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar**
  • 5 large eggs, at room temperature*
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla

Milk mixture

  • 1 1/4 cups (295ml) milk (anything but skim)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk

Topping

  • 2 cups (473ml) heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • Fresh sliced strawberries or cinnamon, for garnish

Instructions

  1. For the cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 13 by 9-inch or 12 by 8-inch baking dish, set aside.
  2. Sift cake flour into a medium mixing bowl. Add in baking powder and salt and whisk 20 seconds, set aside.
  3. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together butter and sugar until very pale and fluffy.
  4. Mix in eggs one at a time, blending until well combined after each addition. Mix in vanilla.
  5. Add in flour in 3 additions mixing just until combined after each addition. Remove mixing bowl from stand mixer and scape down sides and bottom of bowl and fold until evenly incorporated.
  6. Pour batter into prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer (it will seem like a thin layer).
  7. Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean, about 24 - 28 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack, about 45 minutes. Once cool pierce cake many times all over with a long-pronged fork.
  9. For the milk mixture: In a large mixing bowl whisk together milk, 1/2 cup heavy cream, the sweetened condensed milk and the evaporated milk until blended.
  10. Pour evenly over cake then cover and chill at least 6 hours*** or up to 3 days.
  11. For the topping: In a large mixing bowl using an electric hand mixer (or using the stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment) whip heavy cream until soft peaks form.
  12. Add in sugar and vanilla and whip until stiff peaks form. Spread over chilled cake.
  13. Cut cake into slices and serve cold garnished with strawberries or dust with cinnamon if desired. Store cake in refrigerator.
